Tracking meters

Record up to eight process or condition values on a machine, such as pressure, pH or tank level, beside its hourmeter and odometer.

Included in: Every planUpdated

Some equipment is checked by more than its hours: a reactor's dissolved oxygen, a pump's discharge pressure, a tank's level, a panel's energy use. A tracking meter records a value like that on a machine, with its own history, alongside the hourmeter and odometer.

Before you start

  • You need the Equipment: Edit permission to add tracking meters and record their readings. With Equipment: View you can see them and their history.
  • A machine can carry up to 8 tracking meters.
  • A machine with No meter fitted can still carry tracking meters. A reactor has no engine hours but still has a morning round.

Add a tracking meter to a machine

  1. Open the machine and go to the Meter Readings tab. The Tracking Meters card is below the meter history.
  2. Click Add meter.
  3. Choose Choose existing to pick a metric your company already uses, then pick it from the list.
  4. Or choose New metric to define one: enter a Metric name (such as "Dissolved Oxygen") and a Unit, and optionally an Expected min and Expected max.
  5. Click Add meter.

A metric is defined once for your company and can then be added to any machine, so "Pressure" means the same thing on every pump.

Record readings

The Tracking Meters card with a pressure metric, its last value, a box for the new value and the reading date
  1. On the Tracking Meters card, type a value in the box beside each metric you read. The last value is shown as a hint inside the box.
  2. Check the Reading date and Time at the bottom of the card.
  3. Click Save N readings.

If a value falls outside the expected range, a panel titled Outside the expected range lists it. Click Go back & edit to change it, or Save anyway to keep it.

You can also read tracking meters for many machines at once on Daily Meter Entry, where each one has its own column after the main meters.

See the history

Click History beside a metric to see its readings, newest first, with the value and who recorded it. Readings outside the expected range are marked Low or High.

Rules worth knowing

  • Values can go up and down. Unlike an hourmeter, a pressure or pH reading has no "cannot go backwards" rule. Each reading stands on its own.
  • Out of range warns and never blocks. The range is what you expect, not what is allowed. A reading outside it may be exactly the thing worth knowing.
  • Tracking meters are separate from the main meters. They never change the machine's SMR, preventive maintenance due dates or fuel figures.
  • Removing a tracking meter keeps its readings. Click Remove to take it off the machine. If you add it back later, its history returns with it.

Troubleshooting

What you seeWhat to do
A message that the machine "already carries 8 tracking meters, which is the maximum"Remove one before adding another.
A message that a metric "is already assigned" to the machineIt is already on the card. Record readings there.
"Every metric in the registry is already assigned to this machine. Define a new one instead."Choose New metric.
A message that a metric "is archived and cannot be assigned"That metric has been retired. Define a new one, or ask whoever manages metrics to restore it.
"Could not save the readings."Check your connection and try again.
